President Faustin-Archange Touadéra of the Central African Republic (CAR) is scheduled to speak at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025, which will be held in Cape Town from September 29 to October 3. The announcement of his participation follows a recent World Bank approval of a $9.175 million financing package for the Inclusive and Resilient Cities Project in the CAR. This project aims to improve infrastructure, drainage, and service delivery in Bangui and other cities to enhance climate adaptation and sustainable urban development.

The CAR is also advancing its energy development efforts to promote sustainable growth. The country is working on key solar power infrastructure projects, such as the Danzi Solar Park, which is intended to increase clean energy access across the country. With support from international partners like the World Bank and the Global Environment Facility, these initiatives are focused on rural electrification and reducing the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels. By incorporating renewable energy, the CAR is addressing energy poverty, creating economic opportunities, and improving its resilience to climate change.

The 25 MWp Danzi Solar Power Plant, which opened in November 2024, has 30 MWh of battery storage and has reduced the country’s dependence on diesel generation by 90%. The project has also increased domestic capacity by 40% and provides improved access to over 300,000 people. An expansion of the plant to 40 MWp and new off-grid solutions are planned to serve more than one million people by 2027.

In addition to power generation, the CAR and the Democratic Republic of Congo are jointly implementing a Water Resources Management Project with support from the World Bank. This project is designed to enhance transboundary cooperation and supports flood forecasting, hydrological data sharing, and integrated watershed planning in the Ubangi sub-basin. The initiative promotes ecological sustainability, disaster preparedness, and equitable resource management between the two countries.

The CAR and Uganda have also begun to enhance diplomatic and technical cooperation by sharing knowledge on renewable energy deployment and hydropower planning. Uganda’s experience in managing off-grid solutions and regional electricity integration is valuable to the CAR as it modernizes and expands its energy sector.
